Strabismus surgery is surgery on the extraocular muscles to correct strabismus, the misalignment of the eyes. It is done under general anesthesia in children and under local anesthesia in adults. In this surgery, the eyelids are held open by a lid speculum. The surgeon incises the conjunctiva to access the eye muscle. Then the muscles of one or both eyes will be corrected according to type of strabismus. The eye ball is NOT removed from the eye socket during this surgery. The operation usually takes 30 minutes to 2 hours.
