The gastrointestinal tract of humans, which extends from the mouth to the anus, is made up of a digestive tube and digestive glands and is about 7 m long. Digestive glands include salivary glands, stomach wall and intestine, pancreas and liver. The digestive tube also includes the mouth, throat, esophagus, small intestine, large intestine and the rectum. Anything entering the stomach is mixed with the enzymes inside and decomposed into simple parts. This mixture is then channeled out of stomach and goes through intestines to be broken down and absorbed by the bloodstream. The decomposed nutrients spread throughout the body via bloodstream and are either consumed by or stored in cells. The parts of food that are not absorbed in intestines are excreted from the body.
Digestion is the process of absorbing food by dissolving and breaking it into simple chemical compounds in the body of living beings.
